Servant Leadership Day
Servant Leadership Day is an annual event organized and observed by all partners of Opportunity Network around the globe with the intention for all staff to reflect on Christian values of servant leadership. Instituting Servant Leadership Day at Opportunity will remind us that that we are called to serve each other and serve the poor and help us maintain our vision and mission as we meet the pressures of our every day duties and financial objectives.

On Saturday, 12th September we did a big cleaning of the school yard of Elementary and High School for Children with Disabilities "Milan Petrovic" in Novi Sad. This was the sixth time our bank has marked traditional Servant Leadership Day. Besides volunteering, we have donated 10.000 EUR to the school which they have used to buy equipment and machines necessary for proper maintenance of the school yard where former students of the school will be employed. |

"Today we are volunteering, but we pay attention to the problems in our local communities other 364 days of the year too, trying to find ways to address them as much as we can." said Vladimir Vukotic, member of Bank's Executive Board. Chairman of our Executive Board, Rodger Voorhies has also joined us on Saturday, together with his youngest daughter.
"Mission of our school is continued education and rehabilitation of children with disabilities from youngest age until their full social inclusion and Opportunity Bank's help will significantly facilitate the implementation of that mission" said Mrs. Slavica Markovic, School Principal. |

This year, Opportunity Bank has donated a special food-processing kitchen machine worth about 5,000 EUR to the Home for Handicapped Children and Adolescents in Veternik, nearby Novi Sad. This piece of equipment will be used to additionally process meals for the protégés of the Home with the most serious conditions, and there are about 200 of them in this institution. Equally important part of this event was a day that the employees of the Bank’s Head Office and Novi Sad Branch have spent with the inhabitants of the Home: we have spent 13th September learning from them how to sew, knit, weave in different workshops where the protégés of the Home develop their creativity and skills and produce beautiful and useful items. However, the best part of the day was the sports event when our women and men basketball teams measured their strengths with our hosts.

On 15 Sep 2007, Opportunity Bank’s employees have spent a day picking a sea of red paprika at Raskršće Teen Challenge Rehabilitation Center, which runs a rehabilitation program for former drug addicts. This non-profit Christian organization has, as a part of its working therapy, also initiated small and medium business enterprise in order to contribute to the sustainability and cover ongoing operational costs of the rehabilitation of its protégés. The farm is successfully growing and selling spinach, radishes, tomatoes and peppers. Prior to the event, RTC has received a donation from Opportunity Bank worth 6,000 EUR which will provide men’s center with an additional greenhouse and increase their vegetable production. Official research statistics show that the success rate of the Teen Challenge Program in Serbia reaches over 90%.

Servant Leadership Day 2006 |

On June 10th 2006, employees of Opportunity International Serbia had chosen two volunteer projects to participate in: Home for Senior Citizens with Shelter for the Homeless in the nearby town of Futog and Association for Helping Mentally Underdeveloped Persons of Novi Sad. We collected dozens of bags of second-hand clothes and shoe-ware and donated it to the Shelter and its residents and did a lot of gardening works in the Center’s huge and beautiful park. In the premises of the Association for Helping Mentally Underdeveloped Persons, we painted the walls of three basement-rooms, replaced the old floors with the brand-new ones and donated two used desk-top computers. We also donated two office desks and 4 office chairs, as well as musical CDs, game sets, toys, notebooks etc., which the Association’s protégés will use in their creative work.
